Teaching 3-year-old ABC's and 123's?

I am having trouble teaching my 3-year-old son his alphabet and numbers. First of all, because I know people love to make comments about pushing your kids to learn, my son is interested in learning, but he seems to have a hard time with remembering anything.

He has a little LeapFrog frog that sings the alphabet song that he listens to over and over again and a LeapFrog fridge magnet toy where you put the letter in and it goes through a song saying the sound that letter makes. I've been trying to teach him his alphabet, but he can't seem to remember anything. Same with his numbers. I can get him to say numbers, but he hates the number 2 for some reason and everything is always 3. I will count different things with him.. 5 trucks... and then ask him to count how many trucks and it's always 3. I am at a loss of what to do.

Anyone have any ideas on different ways to go about teaching him this stuff? Thanks!

Does he know the alphabet song? If he does that is good. Next start with the letters in his name. Kids like letters that mean something to them instead of being random. I would start by having a piece of paper with his name on it and then you can say his name and then spell it and then have him spell it with you. For instance my son's name is Blake so he spells it for me then I would ask what else starts with B and he usually says something like bat or ball. Then I offer my suggestions to what else starts with that letter. You can even write these down so he can visualize the letters. Then you can go through the rest of his name, your name, and other names you know. Don't worry about him really learning it because he will get it in time right now it is more about the repitition. As for numbers I would start with working only on numbers 1 - 3 first. Every time you take out a toy you can say here is 1 toy. Then take out 2 and say that. Also a great time to work on numbers is at snack time. You can do it where however many goldfish he can count he can have and do that with everything else you can think of too. He will get the hang of it. I worked as a four year old kindergarten teacher and at 4 yrs old they needed to recognize 5 letters and 10 numbers in order for the mastery level.
